Poll: Most Americans Oppose Trump’s “Lake America” Renaming and New Canada Tariffs

A Reuters/Ipsos poll published around September 1, 2026 found that Americans oppose President Trump’s order renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” by 63% to 14%, with the rest unsure. The poll surveyed 1,023 US adults online, with a margin of error of about 4 points. The renaming applies to US federal usage only and doesn’t change what Canada or international bodies call the lake.

Strong opponents (52%) outnumber strong supporters (7%). Republicans also oppose the renaming, 43% to 33%. By comparison, last year’s “Gulf of America” renaming was opposed by more than 7 in 10 Americans, though support was about twice as high.

On the trade dispute, 57% oppose the new tariffs on Canada and 20% support them. More Americans say the US is more responsible for the dispute (46%) than Canada (12%). Asked about personal finances, 40% expect the tariffs to hurt them and 4% expect them to help. By 68% to 25%, respondents prefer that the US not take a hard line in talks, even if it gets less of what it wants.

The results come ahead of the 2026 midterms. Some Republicans have worried the Canada tariffs could hurt their Senate chances in states bordering Canada, such as Alaska, Maine, Michigan and Ohio. How much it will matter at the ballot box remains to be seen.
