Democrats have taken control of the US Senate in the 2026 midterm elections, according to results so far. President Donald Trump’s Republican Party has lost its Senate majority. This is how the Democrats’ Senate win could change Washington.

Midterm Election Results So Far
Democrats won at least 51 seats, which is the number needed for control. Voters chose from 35 Senate seats in this election.

Notable wins included Roy Cooper in North Carolina and James Talarico in Texas. Republicans have kept 43 seats so far. Meanwhile, counting is still going on in the remaining undecided races.

A Divided Government in Washington
As a result, Washington now has a divided government. This could make life very hard for the Trump administration.

Democrats now hold Senate power over several areas:

  • They can slow or block the president’s budget and tax policies.
  • They can stop nominations for Supreme Court judges, cabinet members and ambassadors.
  • They can use standing committees to scrutinize the president’s powers.
  • Note: Impeachment starts in the House of Representatives. The Senate holds the trial. A Democratic Senate would matter in that process, but it could not start one on its own.

What It Means for Foreign Policy
The effect could reach beyond US borders. A Democratic Senate may put the brakes on Trump’s one-sided foreign policy decisions, especially on the Middle East and Ukraine.

Under its war powers, the Senate could also attach conditions to foreign military aid.

Checks and Balances, and the Risk of Gridlock
On one hand, this strengthens the democratic balance of power. One-sided decisions could be stopped.

On the other hand, there is a greater risk of policy setbacks and blocked legislation. Trump’s agenda could be politically paralyzed.

However, Trump could turn this conflict to his advantage. He might use the obstruction to energize his voter base and blame the opposition.

What to Watch Next
Watch for final seat counts, the confirmed numbers in the House, and the first moves by the new Democratic leadership on nominations and budget talks.
