Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force and state media say Iranian forces shot down an MQ-9 Reaper drone belonging to the United States. They also claim to have destroyed two more drones. The reported incident took place near the Strait of Hormuz. This claim has not been independently confirmed.

What Iran Claims Happened

According to the IRGC Aerospace Force and state news agencies, the drones were hit while violating Iranian airspace. Iran describes this as a spying attempt.

The reports place the incident in a sensitive military area. This is the eastern side of the Strait of Hormuz and the area near Bandar Khamir, a southern coastal district.

The MQ-9 Reaper Drone

The most important drone in the claim is the US-made MQ-9 Reaper. Iranian reports call it a very expensive and highly advanced aircraft, worth billions of rupees.

The Reaper is used for high-level surveillance. It can also be used for precise missile strikes, according to the reports.

Two More Drones Reportedly Destroyed

Alongside the Reaper, the reports mention two more drones. They are named as LUCAS (also given as MQM-170) and described as drones used for monitoring and exercises in the Persian Gulf.

According to the claim, the IRGC’s ground-based air defense radar tracked all of them. Iranian forces then destroyed them in the air with locally made surface-to-air missiles. The wreckage reportedly fell into coastal and sea waters.

Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. Therefore, any military incident there is closely watched by governments and energy markets.

What Remains Unconfirmed

At this stage, the following points are unverified:

  • The type and number of drones involved.
  • Where exactly the incident took place.
  • How Washington responds to the claim.

We will update this story if the United States or independent sources respond.
