Pentagon Reportedly Told to Prepare for Possible Resumption of Iran Operations

US President Donald Trump shakes hands with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in Sparrows Point, Maryland, on October 6

The Pentagon has told US Central Command to be ready to resume military operations against Iran, Axios reported on October 8, 2026. Axios said President Trump had not made a definitive decision, that the order carried no date, and that a decision could come before Israel’s elections at the end of October. If operations resume, sources told Axios, strikes would be expected to target nuclear, infrastructure and energy sites.

The US has kept a blockade of Iranian ports in place and has been assisting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. For the wider timeline, see our US–Iran war timeline.

Other reporting cites US officials as saying forces could act within days of an order and that timing may follow the US midterm elections on November 3. We have not been able to confirm those details.
