ANKARA / ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has secured a prestigious second-place finish at the Best International Military Drone Team Competition (BIMDTC-2026) in Ankara, Türkiye, emerging ahead of several international competitors and reinforcing its growing reputation in defence technology.
The competition, which brought together teams from 32 countries, according to the Turkish Land Forces, saw Türkiye claim first place, Pakistan finish second, Italy secure third and France take fourth. The result marks a significant achievement for Pakistan, demonstrating its ability to compete at a high level in a rapidly evolving field that is increasingly shaping the future of military capabilities.
For Pakistan, the achievement carries significance beyond the final rankings. As military forces worldwide invest heavily in unmanned aerial systems, artificial intelligence and autonomous technologies, success in international competitions offers an opportunity to demonstrate technical competence, operational coordination and the ability to innovate under competitive conditions.

A VOTE OF CONFIDENCE IN PAKISTAN’S TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES
The second-place finish puts Pakistan among the leading teams at an international event featuring a diverse field of participants. Competing alongside established defence powers, Pakistan’s performance provides a positive indication of its potential in the expanding military drone sector.
Unmanned aerial systems have become an increasingly important component of modern defence planning. Their applications span surveillance, reconnaissance, intelligence gathering and other military missions. As technology advances, countries capable of developing skilled personnel and reliable systems are likely to gain greater strategic flexibility.
Pakistan’s performance in Ankara therefore offers an encouraging platform for further investment in technical training, research and development, and international cooperation.

WHY THE RESULT MATTERS FOR PAKISTAN
The global defence environment is undergoing a profound technological transformation. Nations are competing not only to acquire advanced equipment but also to develop the engineering expertise, software capabilities and operational skills required to use it effectively.
Pakistan’s achievement highlights the importance of nurturing domestic talent and strengthening the country’s capacity to participate in this transformation.
A strong showing at an international competition can also create opportunities for professional exchanges, knowledge-sharing and partnerships. However, translating competitive success into lasting technological progress will depend on sustained investment, institutional support and the development of indigenous capabilities.

TÜRKİYE–PAKISTAN COOPERATION: A STRATEGIC OPPORTUNITY
Pakistan and Türkiye have longstanding defence ties, providing a foundation for further cooperation in areas such as research, training and technological development.
The competition in Ankara offers a timely reminder of the value of such engagement. Both countries have an interest in developing technical expertise and strengthening their ability to respond to changing defence requirements.
While Pakistan’s second-place finish is an achievement in its own right, its longer-term significance will depend on how effectively the country builds on the experience gained through international participation.

THE ROAD AHEAD
The result should be viewed as a milestone rather than a final destination. International competition in drone technology is intensifying, and maintaining a leading position requires continuous innovation, rigorous testing and investment in skilled professionals.
For Pakistan, the challenge now is to convert promising performances into sustainable progress in research, engineering and domestic production.
The message from Ankara is clear: Pakistan has demonstrated that it can compete on the international stage. The next step is to turn that competitive success into lasting technological strength.
